Custom vs Stock MTB | Which is best for you? by Tor Weiland December 17, 2024 WATCH the Video: When it's time to get a new bike, every rider has to decide between a custom and a stock build. We faced the same question, so we explored both options with a stock Specialized Levo and a custom Specialized Stumpjumper 15. Mike chose the Comp Carbon Specialized Levo as it offers a great blend of performance and value, featuring products that can be rallied hard, don't need to be upgraded right away, and don't break the bank. Highlights of Mike's build include a X01 mechanical drivetrain, Fox Rhythm 36, and Maven Bronze brakes. Not only that, but the Levo has a dang MOTOR that erases climbs and gets you twice as much descending for half the effort compared to the Stumpjumper. Tor's custom Stumpjumper 15 is blinged out from head to toe, and while the parts aren't the absolute most expensive money can buy, they are incredibly high performance and ready for anything. We've done a whole breakdown on the Stumpjumper build, but the highlights are the ZEB Ultimate with Charger 3.1 damper, Reserve 30|HD wheelset, GX Transmission, and Maven Ultimate brakes. The Specialized Levo and Specialized Stumpjumper are the two most popular bikes among our customers, so we figured we would get our hands on these platforms so we can give the best possible answers to your questions. These bikes will serve as test beds for all components coming out in the next few years, including suspension, tires, brakes, and anything else that hits the mainstream! So... which is best for you? It all comes down to experience. Stock builds are so much easier for the rider, and newer riders should go with a stock build without question. It takes years of riding different bikes to understand which parts you like, what shortcoming stock builds have for you, and gain the technical know-how to spec and build a completely custom bike. Plus, stock bikes these days are better than ever, with totally rideable components that will not hold you back, especially if you're newer to mountain biking. After riding for a few years and getting a better understanding of what parts you like and don't like, a fully custom bike begins to make sense. You understand exactly what spec of different components you're looking for, which brands you prefer, and can skip the process of switching out parts on your stock bike before even riding it. If you have access to all the necessary tools, don't mind spending tons of time ensuring compatibility, and can afford to spend a little extra cash, you just can't beat a fully custom build with all of your favorites parts on there.
