OneUp Clip Pedals First Look

Intro

OneUp Components is a Squamish based brand that's famous for their unique components that do things differently than everyone else. Their dropper posts are a customer favorite for their reliability, serviceability, and light weight. All three of those benefits are the case with their new offering, the clip pedal. The OneUp Components Clip Pedal is a brand new product that aims to be the best clip pedal for every rider from cross country to downhill.

There are countless clip pedal options out there, and OneUp is the latest to join the crowd. OneUp is known for shaking things up every time they launch a new product. Their dropper post made everyone else step up their game by lowering prices and making their posts more easily servicable. OneUp redefined the conversation around handlebars with their compliant carbon handlebars easing hand fatigue.

OneUp says their clip pedal is "SPD Compatible", rather than saying it uses the SPD system. That's because they've designed their own cleat and cage that is different from Shimano's SPD system. Shimano's SH51 SPD cleats are compatible with the system, but OneUp recommends using their own branded cleats with their pedals for best performance.

OneUp's clip pedal isn't revolutionarily different than other options, but it does have thoughtful features througout to carve out its own niche. Potentially most importantly, the OneUp Clip Pedal is the thinnest clip pedal on the market, with its thin leading edge measuring 14.4mm, and the center measuring 26.8mm. That means fewer pedal strikes on trail, and less overall material, translating to a very respectable 416g for the pair of pedals. Just looking at the pedals, they're impressively thin, and noticeably more aerodynamic than my preffered CrankBrother Mallets. If we stuck these pedals in a wind tunnel, it would be no contest.

Each side of the OneUp Clip Pedal features a tension system that makes tuning your pedals incredibly easy. The idea of tuning your pedals sounds like a nightmare to some, and a dream come true to others. Luckily, OneUp's tension system operates very similarly to Shimano XT pedals, but features clicks in the tension screw and an easy viewing window to quickly and easily get both sides of both pedals setup with completely even tension. Getting the tension adjusted uniformly across both pedals on Shimanos is tricky, but OneUp uses a system that's very reminiscient of HT pedals with the amount tension on display.

Just like the rest of OneUp's products, their Clip Pedal is easily servicable, with rebuild kits already available at launch. To rebuild their pedals, the only proprietary tools you'll need are the included thin profile 8mm socket and OneUp's Bushing Tool. Rebuilding the pedals is incredibly straightforward, and OneUp's detailed service video includes every step in real time.

If only it was that easy...

Conclusion

There's a lot to like about the OneUp Clip Pedals, and OneUp has proven once again why chose that name. With their light weight, DH rated spindle, easily adjustable tension, and compatibility, there isn't anything to dislike about the OneUp Clip Pedals. My favorite part about them is the choice to call them clip pedals, and not clipless pedals. It's time to move on from that antiquated idea, and I'm making a personal commitment to saying clip pedals when refering to any pedals my shoes attach to.

We just attached these pedals to our bikes, and will be putting the miles on them for a long term review, so stay tuned!
