Staff Bike Checks | Colt's Mullet Specialized Stumpjumper Evo

Colt's Specialized Stumpjumper in the mixed-wheel variety.

This Specialized Stumpjumper belongs to our Warranty Guru and Service Manager, Colt. Being the second Stumpjumper Evo in the shop next to Steve's sleek and stealthy Stumpy with dual 29" wheels, it's awesome to see how versatile these Stumpjumpers are and how differently they can be built up.

Both Colt's and Steve's are extremely capable bike's, uphill and downhill, but just by looking at the builds, you can see the varying focus of the owners. Steve's, with dual 29-inch wheels, a Rockshox Lyrik, and carbon parts all around, is set-up with the chainstay flip-chip in the "low" position and uses the "middle" headset cups. It ends up with roughly a 333mm BB height and a 64° head angle. Built reasonably light and with a slightly steeper head angle, Steve's bike is a little more optimized for holding speed and pedaling longer distances.

Colt's Stumpjumper, on the other hand, errs more on the side of a downhill bruiser. With mixed 27.5/29" wheels, a CushCore tire insert in the rear wheel, and a burly Rockshox ZEB up front, it might not be as light as Steve's or as pedally, but damn does it look confidence inspiring and playful on the downhills! Preferring a higher BB, Colt runs it in the "high" position with the "slack" headset cups installed. For a S5 sized Stumpy with a 27.5" rear wheel, this set-up gives it a 338mm BB height and a 63.5° head angle. It's a mighty fine build, shod with the aforementioned 160mm Rockshox ZEB up front, a Fox Float X out back, DT-Swiss wheels, a Renthal cockpit, and a unique "SRAMano" drivetrain. This Stumpy surely is a stunner, so keep on scrollin' to see more for yourself!

Colt runs his Stumpjumper in the HIGH setting with the SLACK headset cup, which contrasts against Steve's Stumpy set up in the LOW position with the MIDDLE headset cups.

Colts Stumpy sports a "SRAMano" drivetrain. A SRAM XO1 shifter + GX deraileur matched with a Shimano XT cassette and chain, all compliment with a Wolftooth Dropstop chainring on SRAM NX cranks.

The Wolftooth Dropstop Chainring in Nickle sure looks classy!

SRAM Code brakes with Centerline rotors.

A DT-Swiss EX1700 wheelset mounted with a Maxxis Minion DHF in the rear and an Assegai up front .

OneUp's Dropper V2, our go-to dropper post for a reason! It's simple, reliable and adjustable.

A full Renthal cockpit. 800mm Alloy Fatbars, Apex 31.8 stem, and Kevlar Lock-on Grips.

There's another sick build from The Lost Co crew!

About Me: I grew up in the San Juan Mountains of Southwest Colorado where high country epics are the local favorite. After moving to the PNW in the summer of 2021, I'm really loving the steep, loamy, and rooty terrain that Bellingham has to offer. Jumps are growing on me, but still not really my thing. Historically, my bike of choice is a mid-travel 29'er, but the steeper, faster terrain in this area has me curious about a longer-travel mullet bike.
